Upgrading to Wordpress 2.5.1 Successful
April 29th, 2008 | by rey |
I’m sure you Wordpress users took note when version 2.5.1 was released last April 25, 2008. I immediately thought about upgrading to the latest version which promised “a number of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and one very important security fix”.
I started having second thoughts though, when I realized it involved a lot of steps and wouldn’t be as simple as clicking an upgrade button and sitting back while everything updated automatically. I didn’t want to ruin everything I’d been working on over the past few days to make this blog just right if I made a mistake and/or skipped a step.
Boy was I happy when the upgrade instructions page included a link to Keith Dsouza’s Automatic Wordpress Upgrade plugin. Thank you Wordpress people for adding the tip.
You will need to download and unzip the plugin to your computer after which you “ftp” it to your /plugins directory. After enabling the plugin in your “Manage” section, simply click through the provided links to run the upgrade tasks. It’s recommended you don’t run the “automatic” option which does the upgrade without any user interaction. Anyway, the alternative is as simple as clicking “next” after each task is completed. What this plug in does is:
1. Back up your wordpress files.
2. Back up the all important database.
3. Download the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzip it.
4. Put the site in maintenance mode.
5. De-activate all active plugins.
6. Upgrade the wordpress files.
7. Give you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade the installation/database.
8. Re-activate the plugins.
The last step it didn’t do for some reason so I had to go in and reactivate my plugins manually. All this took no more than 3 minutes. It would have been a different story if I had to do all of this manually by following the extended instructions on the upgrade page.
The Automatic Wordpress Upgrade plugin is highly recommended and will surely help on my next upgrade. Kudos to Keith Dsouza for developing it. It’s nice to know this blog has less bugs, is more secure and has enhanced performance.
