The 3G iPhone Nemesis

June 9th, 2008 | by rey |

Just a day before old Steve unveils the new 3G iPhone at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Samsung has come out to announce their take on the “Jesus phone”.

The Samsung i900 Omnia is a PocketPC with the following specs and features:Samsung i900 Omnia

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS
  • 3.2″ WideQVGA (240×400) screen w/ TouchWiz user interface
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus/smile and face detection/auto-panorama
  • 8GB or 16GB versions with a microSD expansion slot for up to 16GB additional storage space
  • Quadband/GSM/GPRS/EDGE+HSDPA (7.2Mbps)
  • WiFi support
  • GPS receiver built-in
  • Accelerometer built-in
  • USB port
  • FM Radio with RDS
  • Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)

Sounds loaded doesn’t it? Apple better have a good camera on that new iPhone. One advantage the i900 Omnia has is it’s Windows Mobile Operating System has tons of software just waiting to be downloaded and installed which makes it a great choice for folks who don’t want to have to “jailbreak” their iPhone just to get “unsupported” software installed. All of this will change however once Apple finally releases their much awaited Software Developers/Development Kit (SDK) for the iPhone allowing every software developer and their second cousin to build legit applications for it.

At the end of the day your choice for the “Jesus phone” that finds its way in your pocket will probably all come down to 1) how much these things are going to cost 2) Are you a Windows Mobile fan or a Steve Jobs groupie 3) Availability.

Samsung will be unleashing the i900 Omnia this month, June 2008, July for the people in Europe. We have yet to find out if the iPhone is truly available for release to the store shelves tomorrow as Steve Jobs awes his faithful followers. A lot of rumors of nondescript boxes making their way into Apple’s retail outlets in conjunction with news on the scarcity of much needed components may mean limited availability of the 3G iPhone once it’s out.

Hold on for news coming from the WWDC in a few hours…

You know. I just can’t wait until Google has released the Android platform. I hear that T-Mobile is picking it up, and I’m not sure if any other carriers out there are. An Open Source phone with plenty of development going into it. I do think that iPhone, and anything else on the market, will just be a thought of what was. Heres to an OSS world!
