Next Windows will be the 7th

We’ve known for a while now that the code name for the version of the Windows operating system which is to supersede Vista some time in Q1 of  2010 is “Windows 7″. On October 13, Microsoft decided on “Windows 7″ as the official name.

Why Windows 7 you ask? The fact is, Microsoft assigns a version number to each build of the operating system based on a different code base (developer speak for the lines of commands that define a computer program/application).

There was Windows 1.0, followed by 2.0, then 3.0. Some may remember 3.1, and 3.11 for Workgroups, but those two are still based on the 3.0 code so aren’t counted as a different version by Microsoft. Windows 4.0 is better known as Windows 95.

Windows 95B, Windows 98, 98SE and Windows ME were all based on version 4.0 code. Windows 5.0 didn’t happen until Windows 2000. Windows XP is officially known as 5.1. I’m sure you can now guess what version 6.0 is. A free copy of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition goes out to the first one who guesses…

And so here we are, the next version of Windows based on an updated code base is Windows 7 (it’s actually version 6.1 for the anal. But, it’s all about giving the perception of ‘newness’.) Attendees of Microsoft’s Professional Developer’s Conference (PDC) 2008 on October 27 to 30 and Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) on November 5 to 7 will get a developer preview copy of the latest Windows version.
